A safety razor holds a single double-edge blade between a protective metal head and plate. One sharp blade passes over the skin instead of three to five, the metal handle lasts for years, and replacement blades cost a fraction of disposable cartridges while creating far less plastic waste.

Many people with sensitive skin prefer a single-blade safety razor because fewer blades touch the skin on each stroke. For the smoothest result, use a rich lather, hold the razor at roughly a 30° angle and let the weight of the razor do the work instead of pressing.

As a guide, replace the blade every 5 to 7 shaves. Thick or coarse beards may need a fresh blade sooner. If you feel tugging or the shave feels less smooth, it is time to change it.
